Over the last years i go to Lefkada almost every year! Either for a couple of days or for one day, the road brings me to the beautiful, all green island of the Ionian sea! Lefkada is a beloved destination, not only to me but also to all those tourists that have so many reasons to visit it. The lovely beaches and the amazing blue waters are some of these reasons. Beaches like those of “Porto Katsiki” and “Egkremnoi” are regularly featured in lists with the best beaches of, not only Greece but also, the world. However there are many more beaches, whose beauty and the sea competes against the most known and really almost every time i visit the island, i get to know a new one! Like for instance the “Kavalikefta” beach….
I admit i didn’t know that beach, besides it is not advertised that much, at least not as much as the rest of the famous ones. So this year that i went again my dear friend S.K. told me: ” You should go to Kalamitsi, the beach there is among the most beautiful ones” He knows, he is from Lefkada, i thought and that’s what i did. Kalamitsi is a village in the western part of Lefkada, in a short distance from Agios Nikitas. To go there, you have to do nothing more than simply follow the road from Agios Nikitas to the beach of “Kathisma”. Without turning right towards “Kathisma” , keep driving straight ahead following the regional road to Vasiliki. When you enter the village, simply head to the direction of the beach that the road sign tells you to go.
A proverb says that whatever worth is hard to get! I don’t want to discourage you, because the beach really is very special, but know that the access to it is difficult! The deserted beach is remote and truly the route from Kalamitsi, will test you. The road is covered with asphalt but it is very narrow! It reminded me of the road to “Sarakiniko” beachin Parga, only that this one is worst! There are some parts with potholes in the road, there are part where even 2 cars cannot pass side by side! The route is downhill, which creates even more problems when one car goes down and the other goes up. However after lots of curves among a beautiful, all green natural scenery, full of olive trees, you will reach the beach!
At the right side of the beach there is a canteen, that manages the umbrellas with the sunbeds, along with the parking lot. If you want you can leave your vehicle on the side of the road, however the price to park your car is 3 Euros, a price that is fair, considering the time you are going to stay there and the parking issues. For two sunbeds and an umbrella think of an other 6 Euros ( At least that was the price in June, when i visited the beach )
Getting off the car, the beach was just right in front of me!
It was a while since the last time i had seen a beach that overwhelmed me that much, like the “Kavalikefta” beach did. A such a beautiful beach that calls me to lie down on the shore and swim in its waters. There are no words to describe such a beauty. Gigantic rocks, obviously a result of a past landslide long ago, were present from the shore all the way to the sea. The beach, full of smaller rocks, pebbles and sand, was almost visible in the harsh, rocky scenery. The waters, these incredible waters, reminded me of the sea in “Egkremnoi” beach, because of the shades of blue. They had this bright, unreal blue color that impresses, that amazes.
I lied back on the sunbed and instantly i felt relaxed! In that remote, almost hidden beach, i found a piece of heaven, that until that time i ignored. In a second i forgot the inconvenient descent, the stress of ascending on our way back, i let behind any concerns and thoughts and i let my self calm hearing the sound of the waves. In front of me, between two huge rocks, through a big open space the sea was visible. I got up and went for a dive. The water was cold, as i was expecting it to be in the region during June. However, after getting in, swimming was a delight. Because of the waves the usually crystal clear water were now blurry and the sea bottom was not visible. A few daring people were on the top of a rock diving from up there into the sea. Since i could see the bottom i didn’t dare to dive from that high.
Generally don’t expect a lot of people! It is not one of the beaches that gathers thousands of swimmers! As a matter of fact the total length of the beach is relatively small! On the other hand, both the facts that its is not very known and the nasty road lead to a small number of vacationers! However there were a few families, although the sea is deep enough, and a lot of couples. The number of the sunbeds is enough in order to find one for you easily, but in case the beach is full of people, don’t leave sad!!
On your left hand, among small and larger rocks, lies a path! Just follow it! Soon it will lead you not far away for “Kavalikefta”, to the nearby beach of “Megali Petra” It is a much bigger beach than “Kavalikefta” in total length, with less impressive massive rocks, outside the sea. The beach has the same amazing blue waters and a shore full of sand and small pebbles! Keep in mind that it is not an organised beach, therefore it would be better to have an umbrella with you. If however you arrive sooner, you will be able to find a lot of shady spot under the nearby rocks.
So this is the “Kavalikefta” beach. A lovely, secret shore that totally worths a visit! I didn’t know its existence, but now that i went i want to go again with the first chance! Whoever went, after mentioning it, left with the very best impressions! it is truly a small piece of paradise and even though i didn’t mentioned it in the list bellow ( Mea Culpa), definitely, unarguably is one of the most beautiful beaches of the Ionian sea.
