I had never been to Chalkidiki! I could only imagine the lovely beaches and the rich, all-green nature of the region. The descriptions were countless, some of them were modest, but most of them were extremely vivid and pompous. Truly, i didn’t know what to expect, when finally i found myself on vacations, on the way to the Sithonia peninsula. I was wondering if the beaches were that charming as i had been told or if the cliché phrase ” There is no other like Chalkidiki” was in fact an exaggerating opinion concerning some rather cute shores. Many people had prompted me to visit the “Kavourotrypes” beach, presenting it to be as one of the most beautiful Greek beaches. So, during the summer of 2015, i went to “Kavourotrypes” and for those who are not in the mood to read the rest of the article, but still wondering if this is indeed one of the best and most beautiful beaches, i have to say only this:
Yes it is……but…
The name “Kavourotrypes” ( literraly means crab’s holes in Greek ) is being used to describe a complex of small beaches that are located about 6 Km from the town of Sarti and 23 Km from Vourvourou. While following the main road that runs the eastern shores of the Sithonia peninsula, you will see a sign that says “Kavourotrypes” or “Orange” beach. I could say that this is the main beach and the only one that is organised.
However before finding the sign, as you drive towards the town of Sarti, you will see a lot of parked cars, alongside the road. For me it is best to park your car in any of these spots, instead of following the dirt road that leads to the main beach. Thus you will avoid any inconvenience while searching for a parking lot, since the most of the crowd gathers there. Cautiously park your car under the shady trees and follow the path that leads to the sea.
It is relatively easy to walk the downhill path and it won’t take long to reach the shore. On your left and on your right you will see many placed tends where people camp. Officially the free camping is forbidden in the region, as many signs in the road inform you about. However in “Kavourotrypes”, free camping is an institution. As a matter of fact, since many years ago, the nearby beaches were an attraction for Hippies and nudists, that were camping in the area. The unbelievably beautiful beaches and the pure all-green scenery, was attracting nature enthusiasts since ever. Even nowadays, you can meet single individuals or small companies that are nudism lovers.
When you get near the sea you can go either right or left. If you move left, you will find a lovely small beach with incredible turquoise waters. From the place where you are you will have to descent towards the shore from a steep enough path, through the rocks. You have to be extra cautious, in order not to slip and hit yourselves, but still it is not a difficult task. As you descent you will see a small sandy beach, that offers rich shade, due to the rocks and the trees, after the midday. Its size is small but swimming is a pure pleasure. It is not that shallow and soon after around 15 meters, you will reach deep waters. It gathers exceptionally lots of people, compared to its size, thus don’t be surprised if you bind yourselves sitting next to strange people.
On your right hand the “Orange” beach is located, the bigger one of the complex in “Kavourotrypes”. What words could i use to express the beauty of this beach? It is indeed one of the most beautiful beaches i have ever seen, a shore with an exotic beauty, similar to those in the tropical parts of the world. People often call it the Hawaii of Chalkidiki. Green and blue waters, crystal clear, that let you see the sea bottom and a scenery, what a scenery!! Rocky, sleek formations start from the shore and end in the sea, forming small peninsulas and coves, thus being subjects of exploration and photography.
Around the beach, the scenery is all-green, as the trees, mainly pine trees, reach almost the sea shore! What a lovely scenery for someone that enjoys swimming!!! A part of the beach is organised and there you will be able to find an umbrella and sunbeds, relatively easy, if you go early in the morning. The “Orange” beach bar manages the sunbed and you can get from there water to drink, refreshments or a beer. It has a selection of nice music, not very loud, exactly as i prefer it while being on the beach! The sandy part of the area is rather small, but the surrounding rocky formations are ideal to spread your pallets and leave your stuff. Pay attention not to walk barefooted on the rocks, as these are extremely hot due to the summer sun.

On the left of the beach the sea is relatively shallow and the bottom particularly beautiful! Definitely the snorkeling enthusiasts will be satisfied. Not far away offshore there is a big rock! All the time i was there, many people were continuously climbing on the its top and then diving in the sea! Make sure you try it, since the sea is deep enough and there is no danger to hit on the bottom. At the right side there is one more small cove, beautiful and scenic and moreover there is the local landmark of the beach, the mermaid. Many years ago, in 1997, one of the swimmers, Karypides Dionysus, member of a nudist’s club, curved on the rocks, the shape of a mermaid, lying down on the shore. Its is a lovely sculpture, a true piece of art, that since then attracts the tourists that come over to the beach to see it by themselves! During my visit there, swimmers were around the sculpture, admiring it and taking photos.
However there is a big but…
What ever i wrote right above is a description of the beach years ago! Nowadays things are different or if you prefer some things have changed and as a result many people that had visited the place and had been impressed by it, now say that they won’t go again. The mermaid is no longer there. Some time after i went there, its sculptor destroyed it due to some kind of conflict with the municipality of Sithonia, that had charged him with a fine for destroying the natural environment. Furthermore the people that visit the beach are countless. Extremely many compared to its size and as a result everyone sits on top of the other! I cant imagine how can someone enjoy the vacations in that way! As for the kinds, forget it! Small beach, lots of people, don’t even think that your kinds will be happy playing on the sand! The beach is not friendly for families, it’s only for couples, groups of friends, and the few nudists.
I said before that many people choose the area for free camping. If there is something that left me the worst impression and formed a dark mark in my vacations, that was the dirty environment. I have never been camping, but if i had been i would make sure not to litter the nature that shelters me. I am a nature enthusiast, as i imagine are all those people that choose camping as their vacations! What better than being near nature? However you have to love it and protect it! I didn’t see that in “Kavourotrypes. On the contrary what i saw was lots of garbage! Garbage everywhere, as a result to the existence and the actions of the campers. Bottles of water, beer cans!! Many beers!! Many many beers!! Furthermore there were plastic bags with leftovers and a lot of toilet paper!! Toilet paper on the dirt, on top of the bushes, on top of the trees!! Ok, i get it, we have to defecate outdoors, its a camp after all, but at least pick up your toilet paper for god’s sake! I felt sick, honestly, and the image of the exotic beach, one of the most beautiful, faded, lost a piece of its glamour in my eyes.
So now what???
Definitely, older people that had visited the beach years ago, felt how it is to be in paradise! Magical, exotic, beautiful, unique, are words that match the description! Its one of those beaches that created the myth around the expression ” There is no other like Chalkidiki”, however people have done it again…… Would i go again??? Yes, i would go again, as you should go to judge by your own! I would go without any kinds, early or late in the summer, when it is not crowded. Then maybe i could feel impressed, i could relax, i could enjoy “Kavoyrotrypes” , i could feel how it is like in heaven….
